Are you a person who avoids the dentist because of the cost of dental care? You will find that most dentists are committed to helping you achieve and maintain your best oral health, regardless of your financial circumstances. Individuals who avoid dental care due to financial concerns are doing themselves a disservice. Most dentists are willing to work with you and help you find the resources you need to help you get necessary dental care.

Preventive Care Saves Time and Money

The most economical way to save on dental bills is preventive dental care. When you make your regular dental checkups, you dentist is able to identify problems in their earliest stages. If you do not have any disease in the gums or teeth, consider yourself fortunate. If you do, an early diagnosis and can help minimize the cost of treatment.

Your dental checkup will reveal areas that may be susceptible to gum disease. When these areas are brought to your attention, you can work to keep them clean and disease free. Small cavities can be identified and filled before they spread and develop into more expensive problems. A tiny cavity on one surface is not such a problem. If that small bit of tooth decay is not removed, it can spread, involving more surfaces of the tooth and get further into the tooth, possibly causing an abscess.

If the decay reaches the pulp of the tooth, you will either need root canal therapy to save it or you will need an extraction. Both will be more costly than getting the small cavity filled when it is first discovered. Even though an extraction sounds like it would be cost-effective at that point, when you consider the problems caused by the space left, it turns out to be more expensive. This is especially true if more of your teeth are left to decay and must be extracted. The cost is financial as well as in your oral and general health.

Help Is Available for Dental Care

Before assuming that you cannot in any way afford dental care for yourself or family members, talk with your dentist or dental office manager. Special payment plans are often available if you ask. Some dentists may even be willing to work with you on a pay-as-you-go basis in order to help you attain sufficient oral health.
