Scaling and root planing therapy is a procedure that involves removing bacterial plaque and tartar from the root surface below the gumline with instruments and ultrasonics. It may also require removal of diseased tissue within the pocket with a laser. The goal of this treatment is to allow reattachment of the gums to the clean root surface and to shrink the periodontal pockets to levels that can be maintained by daily flossing and brushing. The following guidelines have been prepared for you in order to maximize healing and minimize any discomfort.

Refrain from eating for at least 2 hours or until the anesthesia has worn off.

To minimize the discomfort and aid in proper healing following your scaling and laser therapy procedures, we suggest the following:

  • Take Aleve (naproxen) or Advil (ibuprofen) before the anesthetic wears off. Continue to take one tablet every 4-6 hours for the next two days, as needed.
  • Use an extra soft toothbrush at least two times a day. Be gentle and clean thoroughly. Slight bleeding and tissue sloughing may occur while brushing as the tissues begin to heal.
  • Rinse with warm salt-water solution (mix 1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 oz. warm water)three to four times a day for the next 24-48 hours.
  • Sensitivity to cold may occur. Use a desensitizing toothpaste (such asSensodyne), and/or a fluoride mouth rinse (such as ACT) frequently for a minimum of 2 weeks.
  • Refrain from flossing and using a powered toothbrush, waterpik, or water flosser for the next few days.
  • We recommend a soft diet for 24-48 hours. Avoid popcorn, chips, spicy foods and mouth rinses with alcohol.
  • Refrain from smoking for at least 24 hours. Tobacco interferes with healing.
  • As the tissue heals you may increase brushing and flossing.
  • Please call our office if you have any questions or concerns.
